What actually limits what your truck can tow
Every tow rating is published for a truck with one 150 lb driver in it. We ran 58 pickup configurations through their own OEM numbers to see how fast that stops being the limit that matters.

Ask what a truck can tow and you get one number — 11,200 lb, 14,000 lb. That number is real, it is SAE J2807-tested, and it describes a truck with a 150 lb driver aboard and nothing else. Put a family, a cooler and a weight-distributing hitch in the same truck and a different limit takes over, because tongue weight lands on the truck's payload rather than on its tow rating.
This is folklore in every towing forum — payload binds first. We wanted the number behind the folklore: at what point does it actually happen, and on how many trucks?
The advertised tow rating stops being the limit before you finish loading the cab
Which of the three published weight limits allows the smallest trailer, across 58 pickup configurations, as weight goes into the truck. At the spec sheet's 150 lb driver the tow rating binds on 98%. At 550 lb — a family of four plus the hitch — it binds on 26%.

What the chart says
- The spec sheet is a tow-rating world. With the SAE driver alone, the tow rating is the smallest limit on 98% of configurations. That is the world every brochure, comparison table and dealer conversation lives in.
- It ends at about 550 lb. Two adults, two kids and a weight-distributing hitch is roughly 550 lb. There the tow rating is the binding limit on 26% of configurations — payload (36%) and GCWR (38%) have taken over.
- At 900 lb aboard, the tow rating is nearly irrelevant. Payload binds on 76%, GCWR on 19%, the tow rating on 5%.
- The honest maximum trailer drops 27% along the way — median 10,950 lb empty, 7,960 lb with 900 lb in the truck. Nothing was towed, nothing broke: the same trucks, the same OEM numbers, a different passenger list.
Notice what GCWR does. It is the limit nobody quotes, and between roughly 500 and 700 lb of cab load it is the binding one more often than payload is. On a diesel or a heavy crew cab, the combined limit runs out while the door sticker still looks comfortable.
Why the spec sheet is a 150 lb world
SAE J2807, the standard behind modern tow ratings, specifies the test vehicle's load: a 150 lb driver, and for the trailer test one 150 lb passenger. That is the point of a standard — every manufacturer tests the same way, so the numbers compare. It was never meant to describe your Saturday.
Payload is where your Saturday shows up. Every pound of people, dogs, firewood, generators and hitch hardware comes out of the same door-sticker number that has to absorb the trailer's tongue weight — typically 10–15% of the loaded trailer. At 12%, every 100 lb you add to the cab costs about 830 lb of trailer.
What to do with this
- Shop by payload, not by tow rating. Two trucks with the same headline number can be 1,000 lb apart on the sticker — see how far the advertised number sits from the configurations that exist.
- Read your own door sticker. Payload varies per truck, not per model: options, packages and even wheels move it by hundreds of pounds. The OEM figures here are best-case published values for each configuration.
- Run your actual load. The tow-match calculator does exactly what this study does, for one truck: it names which limit binds and by how much.
- Then weigh it. One CAT scale pass fully loaded settles payload and axle loads in a single ticket.
Method
Population. 58 configurations from 7 US pickup lines — Chevrolet Colorado, Ford F-150, Ford F-250 Super Duty, GMC Sierra 1500, Ram 1500, Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Tundra — model years 2014–2026, drawn from our 157-configuration OEM dataset. A configuration enters the study only if its manufacturer publishes all three weight limits (payload, GCWR and curb weight) for it: a limit that is not published cannot bind, so including partial records would understate payload and GCWR exactly where the data is thinnest.
No SUVs or crossovers are in this study, and that is a finding of its own. Not one of the 32 SUV/crossover configurations in our dataset publishes payload, GCWR and curb weight together — Toyota publishes GCWR for 13% of its records, Honda and Subaru for none. The result here is a statement about pickups because pickups are what the OEMs document.
Math. Each configuration is run through the same engine as the site's calculator. At cab load L (people + cargo + hitch hardware, starting at the SAE 150 lb driver), the three limits are the maximum trailer each one allows:
tow rating= the published rating, unchanged by load;GCWR= GCWR − (curb weight + L);payload= (payload − L) ÷ 0.12, the 12% typical tongue fraction.
The smallest of the three binds. Derived limits are rounded down to 10 lb — we never round a capacity up.
What is excluded, and why. The factory receiver is a fourth real limit and the calculator does apply it, but it is left out here: it is the one limit you can change with a bolt-on part, and OEMs publish it for a minority of configurations, so including it would let data coverage drive the result. Rear axle (GAWR) is excluded too — deriving a trailer limit from it needs hitch geometry the OEMs do not publish.
Limitations. Published payload is the best case for a configuration; a real truck's door sticker usually reads lower, which moves the crossover earlier, not later. The 12% tongue fraction is the typical value in the 10–15% band; at 13% payload binds sooner. And seven model lines are not the whole US market — they are the lines whose manufacturers document them fully.

Every number above is reproducible from binding-mix.csv (the chart, one row per 10 lb step) and oem-configs.csv (all 157 source configurations with their OEM citations).
