Ram 1500 towing capacity (2019–2026)

DT-generation Ram 1500 (2019+) conventional towing ranges from about 6,300 lb (3.6L eTorque V6, 3.21 axle, Crew Cab 4x4) up to the famous 12,750 lb — which applies only to the 5.7L HEMI eTorque, Quad Cab 4x2 with 3.92 axle and the Max Tow Package (GCWR 18,200–18,350). The 2025 refresh replaced the HEMI with 3.0L Hurricane inline-sixes (up to 11,550 lb per the official chart), and for 2026 the 5.7L HEMI eTorque returned at up to 11,320 lb. Every rating below is SAE J2807 per FCA/Stellantis towing charts.

The payload reality check

Take the 2019–2024 5.7L HEMI V8 eTorque rated at 12,750 lb with 1,840 lb of payload. Load a family (550 lb of people, 150 lb of gear) and the honest limit becomes 9,500 lb — limited by payload (tongue weight), computed the same way as our calculator.

Each trailer's published GVWR (fully loaded) run through our engine against the 2019–2024 5.7L HEMI V8 eTorque Quad Cab, loaded with two adults, two kids and gear (700 lb) and a conservative tongue weight — the same math as the calculator.

What owners actually tow

Real-world reports from owner communities — experiences, not ratings. Your configuration and load decide what's safe.

  • Experienced owners cap a Ram 1500 around 28–30 ft and 7–8,000 lb of trailer regardless of the 10,600 lb rating — crew-cab door stickers run about 1,400–1,700 lb of payload, and tongue weight eats most of it.

One owner's CAT-scale check: a 29.5-ft trailer at 6,650 lb loaded put 950 lb on the hitch including the WDH, against roughly 1,600 lb of sticker payload on his 2023 Laramie (his 2016 Outdoorsman had only ~1,200). Another tows a 28-ft Catalina with a 2017 Ram 1500 4x4 and a weight-distribution hitch and reports it "pulls like a dream."

    r/traveltrailers thread

  • A 5.7L Hemi with 3.92 gears barely notices a 3,500 lb 20-ft trailer — it's the step up to a ~7,100 lb GVWR camper where the payload math starts to bite.

A 2021 Ram 1500 Big Horn owner towing a 20-ft Jayco said he doesn't notice it behind the truck. Thread math on his planned upgrade put tongue weight near 900 lb against his 1,779 lb door-sticker payload, leaving under 900 lb for two people, hitch hardware, and cargo — with advice to run E-load tires, air up the rears, use tow mode, and not cheap out on a WDH with sway control.

    r/traveltrailers thread

  • Trim quietly moves the ceiling: a loaded '21 Rebel crew cab carries just 1,580 lb of payload (owners quote ~1,800 for a comparable Big Horn), so a 30-ft bunkhouse with 600 lb of family aboard already busts the sticker.

The owner ran the numbers on a Jayco Jay Flight 263BHS (6,170 lb dry, 7,600 lb GVWR) behind his Rebel with 11,880 lb of tow rating to spare — and the thread still talked him down over payload and the sail effect of a 33-ft box on soft half-ton coils. He ended up bringing home a 23-ft trailer instead and called it the right call.

    r/GoRVing thread

  • The upgrade trigger owners describe isn't power, it's margin: a 2017 Ram 1500 with a 1,300 lb sticker "handles" a 30-ft travel trailer well, but its owner went shopping for a 2500 anyway.

His shopping targets — at least 1,500 lb payload, 15,000 lb GCWR, 10,000 lb tow — were all things the half-ton technically met except payload headroom. Replies noted Ram 2500 stickers range from about 2,000–2,400 lb with the Cummins to ~3,000 lb with the 6.4L Hemi, and that a VIN lookup in the Ram towing guide beats trusting used-truck listings.

How to read these numbers

Every figure above is the manufacturer's rating for that specific configuration — engine, drivetrain, cab, and package — not a model-wide maximum. Two things still matter before you hitch up: your individual vehicle's door-jamb sticker (options change payload truck by truck), and your real load — on most trucks, payload runs out before the tow rating. Estimate your trailer's loaded weight with the trailer weight calculator, then check the full picture in the tow-match calculator.
