The payload reality check

Take the 2022–2026 3.4L i-FORCE TT V6 (389 hp) rated at 12,000 lb with 1,940 lb of payload. Load a family (550 lb of people, 150 lb of gear) and the honest limit becomes 10,330 lb — limited by payload (tongue weight), computed the same way as our calculator.

What owners actually tow

Real-world reports from owner communities — experiences, not ratings. Your configuration and load decide what's safe.

  • Owners agree the Tundra runs out of payload long before its 10,000+ lb tow rating — and published tongue weights understate reality by 200+ lb, so weigh the rig at a CAT scale.

One owner towing a 28-ft Grand Design with a 2017 5.7L measured ~900 lb of actual tongue weight against the brochure's 684 lb, maxing out payload with just two people, propane, batteries, and a WDH. The thread's OP, planning a 35-ft trailer behind a 2023 SR5 CrewMax, found his door sticker read 1,410 lb — not the 1,610 lb he had assumed — and ended up buying a three-quarter-ton instead.

    r/ToyotaTundra thread

  • A 29-ft, ~8,500 lb loaded travel trailer fits within a 5.7L Tundra's 10,500 lb rating and tows fine — but budget for 8–9 mpg and rear-suspension help to keep the rig level.

The owner added air bags to fight rear squat and reported 8–9 mpg, which with his fuel tank meant frequent stops. Another owner in the thread towed a 29-ft, 5,200 lb dry trailer with a 2016 Tundra, called it "near the limit of comfort," blew out his shocks doing it, and switched to Timbren bump-stop replacements.

    r/ToyotaTundra thread

  • Rear squat shows up even with every spec verified in range — the community's fix order: a properly set weight-distribution hitch first, then Timbrens or air springs if the truck still sits low.

A 2010 Tundra owner towing an Airstream 22FB had 900 comfortable miles behind him but more squat than he liked; the dealer had set the hitch height with the trailer empty and skipped weight distribution entirely. Repliers were unanimous that a half-ton needs a WDH for anything beyond a teardrop — it levels the truck and adds real stability in crosswinds and semi-truck passes.

How to read these numbers

Every figure above is the manufacturer's rating for that specific configuration — engine, drivetrain, cab, and package — not a model-wide maximum. Two things still matter before you hitch up: your individual vehicle's door-jamb sticker (options change payload truck by truck), and your real load — on most trucks, payload runs out before the tow rating. Estimate your trailer's loaded weight with the trailer weight calculator, then check the full picture in the tow-match calculator.
